A woman has been praised for hitting back at her brother-in-law, after he branded her leg hair “gross.”

The teen shared the family drama to Reddit‘s Am I The A**hole forum, under username Hortenhearsawho1, explaining her 28-year-old sister and her husband, 33, came round for dinner to her parents’ house.

The 19-year-old wrote: “I was watching my nieces while dinner was getting ready, we sat down and I happened to sit next to brother in law. I was wearing a skirt and it was accidentally lifted above my knee, my brother in law looked down at my leg and made [a] face then loudly said ‘Oh shooot, Op! This is gross, you should’ve shaved, that hair isn’t supposed to be there’

“Everyone stared, I told him ‘if it’s not supposed to be there then why does it grow there, can you explain?’ He was like ‘it’s just not supposed to be there,’ I point at his mustache and say ‘well, guess the same thing can be said about your little mustache then, huh?’ He looks at me eyes wide open, and awkward silence takes over though some laughed.”

She said he got up to go to the bathroom, while she and her other siblings giggled.

“My sister followed and I could hear him having a breakdown asking her if there was something wrong with his mustache,” Hortenhearsawho1 added.

Despite his initial comments, she claims she was told to apologize for what she said to her brother-in-law, who she said in the comments is a police officer.

“I later got scolded by my sister saying I stepped over the line and disrespected someone who’s older than me, who’s her husband and demanded I apologize to him for insulting him and ruining dinner,” she said.

The post, shared on Sunday, has amassed nearly 20,000 upvotes and Hortenhearsawho1 has added an edit clarifying why her brother-in-law got so upset.

She said: “My sister said the reason my brother in law got so offended was because he considers his mustache as a symbol of his ‘manhood’ and so I insulted his ‘manhood’ not just made a ‘backhanded comment.'”

“She said I psychologically harmed him and should apologize for it but I’m not sure if this fixes anything except how he feels about his mustachy mustache.”

Numerous people sided with the teenager. Chaosandpuppies wrote: “Anyone who says leg hair ‘isn’t supposed to be there’ as a method of shaming women into complying with ridiculous beauty standards is always, always the AH. NTA. I bet his mustache looks ridiculous.”

HelianthusAnnus917 wrote: “I just feel bad for his daughters who 1) will have to deal with his misogyny, and 2) will have to look at that moustache every day…”

QuackLikeMe commented: “Damn if he’s so sensitive about his mustache he really shouldn’t be commenting on other people’s appearances. NTA.”

MamaUrsus thought: “This dude is basically the definition of fragile masculinity. Good for OP to stand up for herself and inadvertently cause this sexist dude confront those issues within himself. NTA.”

AdrianeKay remarked: “Ew. The physical manifestation of toxic masculinity itself! Tell him leg hair on women is natural and legal. And that being a creepy perv who stares at legs is not.”

NUT-me-SHELL added: “NTA. He got what he deserved. And your sister should be ashamed of herself for being married to such an ignorant a**hole.”

While it’s not clear where the family is based, a YouGov survey, conducted last year, revealed two-thirds, 64 per cent, of Brits thought it was unattractive for women to have hairy legs.

That figure was slightly higher for all male respondents, at 66 per cent, although women sharing the same opinion were close behind, with 62 per cent saying leg hair is unattractive on their gender.

The group with the highest dissatisfaction with females having hairy legs was men aged between 40 and 59, with 73 per cent of respondents reacting negatively.

Newsweek has reached out to Hortenhearsawho1 for comment.
